Did you know?  When wet, a healthy strand of hair can stretch an additional 30% of its original length!

If the hair is healthy, it will stretch to up to 30% of its length and then return. If the hair doesn’t stretch, it lacks moisture and needs nourishment and if it breaks in between it lacks protein and is also low in moisture. However, if your hair stretches but it doesn’t spring to its original length, it needs more protein.

Weird things you didn’t know about your hair

By Nirja Jaiswal | Friday Facts , Hair Care Blog

Hello, FairFaxFam!

How’s your week going so far? Your relationship with your hair is a lot like our relationship with people. The more you get to know the people around you, the better you understand them and their behavior, and therefore, the better you’re able to take care of them. Hair is actually more complicated than you think. It’s important that you know everything you can about it so we know. Check out the weekly series, Friday Facts by FairFax in which we post fascinating but lesser-known amazing hair fact (or two) that might just leave your mind-blown.

Did you know?  The most common hair color in the world is Black or dark-brown hair, and rarest is Red. Only 1-2% of the population has NATURAL red hair.

As people age, they produce black eumelanin, which makes black hair black, but stop producing other types of melanin, resulting in grey hair. Natural red hair is the rarest hair color in the world, only 1 to 2% of the global population has red hair. The pigment pheomelanin gives red hair its unique color. Since red hair is a recessive genetic quality, it is necessary for both parents to carry the gene, whether or not they themselves are redheaded. Due to this there are more people who carry the redheaded gene, than there are people with red hair.

Fun and Interesting Facts About Hair You Never Knew

By Nirja Jaiswal | Friday Facts , Hair Care Blog

Hello, FairFaxFam!
How’s your week going so far?? You know your hair is your BFF. It’s your best asset. It dictates whether or not you have a good or bad day. It changes with you, and it’s always there for you… but do you really know everything about it? Check out the weekly series, Friday Facts in which FairFax post fascinating but lesser-known amazing hair fact (or two) that will shock you.

Did you know?  A single strand of your hair can support up to 100 grams of weight. A human head has around 100,000- 120,000 strands of hair. If you take all hair strands together, then you can support up to 12 tons of weight, which is equal to the weight of two elephants!

Hair is strong and made up of keratin. Keratin is composed of various amino acids that wrap around each other on the molecular level like a chain. Your hair has unbelievable tensile strength that when the force is required to pull something it can hold up to the weight of 2 elephants. Your hair can become dry and weak if you don’t include enough vitamins or protein in your daily diet. Moisture and temperature can also have an effect on your hair’s texture. So if you want your hair to be flawless and strong, eat plenty of protein, protect your hair from sun damage, do regular exercise, and get trims every six to eight weeks. Your hair will be Rapunzel-ready in no time.

Did you know? Hair can be useful in interesting ways. Hair absorbs oil out of the water, can be used as a natural sponge!

The prevailing methods to clean up oil spills depend on synthetic materials and dangerous chemicals. But there is a natural, environmentally sustainable alternative: human hair. Yes, you heard it right! Human hair could be used to help clean up environmental disasters such as oil spills. It sounds a little strange, but it could mean we use a cheap and natural product to clean up oil, instead of the synthetic or expensive products currently used. Hair is hydrophobic and biosorbent, which means it keeps away water and can collect heavy metals and other contaminants, like oil.
